RAF Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack against an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was positioned in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of approach shafts leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established jihadist rule over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This strike shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to stamp out any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

RAF aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank the personnel of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary commented. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove militants who threaten our security, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in Syria, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates IS still maintains an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
